Mobilink World Best Viewed in IE6

Mobilink World Best Viewed in IE6

While stuck in traffic i receive an SMS from Mobilink Informing me about there another portal service “Mobilink World” . Being a net addict to the internet i went over to the site and once again just like Wateen i witnessed the sentence written in the footer “Best Viewed in IE6″ is it me or all the IT experts working in big companies like Mobilink are blind as to what they have mentioned on the footer of there site. Let me explain what they meant by “Best Viwed in IE6″ the sentence clearly states that

“We have build this site on Windows Based system using HTML tables drawn in Dreamweaver we don’t know even HTML, although the technology we used to build dynamics of the site is PHP which is an open source platform, we have learned to write this sentence in 1990’s when there was Internet Explorer & Netscape Communicator, we have no idea about Firefox, Opera, Safari, we really don’t know if this site will open in a cell phone browser either, we don’t know what accessibility, usability and cross browser / cross platform accessibility is we have never heard of W3C standards”

Unfortunately for me this kind of statement goes personal as every single day i spend hours of my work drafting, refining, optimizing & studying CSS  i work hours optimizing a site to work perfectly with IE6,IE7, Firefox 1, Firefox2, Opera, Safari, i try to figure out a way to make a site look perfect in all resolutions. But for some people its just collection of the check without caring as to what image they are projecting to there work. I dont claim my site to be perfect but at least it stands at a level where its code is optimized, it works in all browser, its written in clean CSS and validates w3c. But in Pakistan the web is evolving & becoming a necessity for every corporation but the people ending up getting the projects are not qualified for the work they land in. As long as corporations make decisions on the basis of reference and connection the end result will be “Best Viewed in IE6″

Hi Zeeshan. You’re obviously a die-hard soldier of from the open-source community, which I personally admire and give much credit to for hundreds of great products.

However, with time, you will agree that we must keep facts in perspective. IE is still the most widely used browser in the world (acknowledging this is not a crime). It is also gaining strength on mobile devices faster than any other single browser. And Dreamweaver is used by the biggest and most creative development houses. Using these products doesn’t make you an idiot, just as using Redhat Linux doesn’t make you a ’second-grade’ network engineer (as some desi Sun/Unix techies may still argue).

You just have to know what your dev tool’s (few) drawbacks are, and then work around them - just as you do with many open source products that have many security holes, stability issues, etc. We don’t stop using great open CRMs’ or CMSs’ just because they have security or stability issues. We patch them up, stabilize them, and roll-out an even better product. Move on!!

The world progresses as we learn to use what we have to further ourselves, not by re-inventing the wheel. But you already know this, or else you wouldn’t be using Wordpress to write this blog ;)

@A. Khan With all due respect, “best viewed in IE 6″ is a big no no for any quality website. It says that you have totally undermined the “usability” and “accessibility” aspect. It shows that you don’t respect the users coming to your website, but only the masses that use IE 6 - which by the way is officially history ! don’t you know microsoft’s new kid, the IE *7* ?
I think people still use Windows 98 on your side of the world. Lol !
I know, big companies are least bothered, specially because people are not so literate about the web here, yet.
I bet “Evamp & Saanga” must boast that “hey we are so good because we got mobilinks project” - a sad and pathetic reminder how things are here and how we need a big change.

ooo , oooo …. another thing, I bet Evamp And Saaga’s owner must be “well” connected with some big gun in Mobilink. May be a “massi a ka puttar” - lol !- because according to these guys:

“Our strengths include rapid development using innovative and cost-effective solutions. We use latest technologies and methodologies and use the correct mix of commercial and open-source software to provide our customers with the best solutions for their requirements.”

gahahaha, and they can’t make it work in other browsers ! lol !
