Denial, frustration and pointing fingers this is what happens when a project is screwed ! Did you overwrite that file ? >> where did the changes go i made a few hours back ? who deleted the file ! I didn’t do anything i am innocent !

Common reactions that i faced while working at my previous job, where there were tons of HTML files, multiple number of projects, and usually the above mentioned scenario happened every day ! I am working hard on this project and so is the other person but what to do we have to use the same files ? Copy / paste / backup / copy / paste ……… and you have 100’s of folders of the same files duplicated and when screw-up happen you have no were to go but to start again ! How to work on a single project individually without screwing up other persons work ?

Huston we have a problem ! every problem has a solution, but to find a solution you have to first realize that there is a problem ! At our end we designed a process, which was air tight to protect other team members from overwriting the files, making changing to the files but in that process it required a lot of communication between team members i.e. “Don’t use the files starting with ‘i’ ” , this is not the solution !

Recently with a bit research and few discussion i happen to find out one of the life saving tool named Microsoft Visual SourceSafe 6.0, although i must blame my supervisors for not introducing me to such tools ! grr….

Anyhow Sourcesafe is a desktop application that have version control for all kinds of Project files, it integrates with Macromedia Dreamweaver creates a database / user accounts and then from those user accounts different team members can work on a single project simultaneously without even worrying about overwritten files or delete files ! Its not only for dynamically driven projects but for simple HTML sites too

The setup is quite simple create a database with the help of sourcsafe admin block, create users that can access that data base, add project to the data base. Once this is complete create a site using dreamweaver site manager tool and add the data base on the site as root directory and create local directory on your computer. All the users do this stuff, once done every body connects to that data base access the simple HTML project unlock files modify and save and check in the files, hence every user has his own local copy that is updated with changes automatically. Its a life saver if you have faced such a problem!

Its so simple and so professional that it organizes the data, keeps every team member updated with fresh copies, keeps a version control of all files with date and comments, it’s a teams life saving and increasing efficiency tool !
